The founder of Aalgo, Tom Roche-Garland, was himself a life-long sufferer of severe eczema. As a child he was taken by his parents to Switzerland and America for any possible treatments, but the only time he got any relief was when spending his summers by the sea and swimming in the sea for long periods every day.

Into adulthood the problem got worse, and with business stress, frequently chronic.

In the 1980's his business took him to hotter climates for long periods in the winter so again the problem subsided with swimming in the sea.

At this point, already in a different end of the seaweed business, with his vast experience of seaweeds and armed with the knowledge that the Chinese have used seaweed for medicinal use since 3,000 BC, he decided to try to replicate the sea in his bath water so that he could be clear-skinned all the time.

This turned out to be both a very lengthy and costly exercise although eventually successful.

Approximately five years later the four different species of wild seaweed were put together to produce what is now Aalgo, and by 2001, Aalgo had finally been brought to the fine, non-gritty powder it is today.

Aalgo powder turns your bath water into seawater without the stinging affects of the salt, so that even babies will play quite happily in an Aalgo bath.

Tom himself has not an outbreak in fourteen years and during this time has shared the benefits of Aalgo with the public through exhibitions and in latter years the internet.
