60 North Recycling Limited is a Shetland-based Company employing 14 staff engaged in all aspects of waste management including waste haulage, container supply, waste treatment, recycling and disposal.

The company is the only licensed operator of metal processing and recycling facilities in the Shetland Islands and have experience of offshore decommissioning, remediation and cleanup operations, structural demolition and dismantling and all types of waste removal, disposal and recycling.

Our clients for this type of work include BP, Sullom Voe Terminal, Lerwick Port Authority, Shetland Amenity Trust, Shetland Islands Council, RAF Saxa Vord, and British Telecom.

Most recently, we successfully processed over 7,000 tonnes of piece small and piece medium material as part of the FRIGG project for Total /Veolia / Aker Kvaerner and have recently processed material landed in Lerwick from LINNHE .

We operate a 0.9 hectare, licensed hazardous waste transfer and treatment facility adjacent to the main Shetland landfill and energy recovery facilities in Lerwick and have permits for the reception and size reduction of oversize structures at two quayside locations.

Our secure site is accessed via a certified and calibrated 50 tonne weighbridge, allowing accurate recording of incoming and outgoing loads, the surfaces are concreted with falls to a 4 stage interceptor. There is a recycling warehouse and bunded storage for waste oils and hazardous wastes. A quarantine facility is used for the receipt and storage of non-conforming wastes.

A Lefort 600 tonne pre-compression shear is used for baling and shearing scrap metal and a specialised Liebherr 954 demolition excavator fitted with a 2,400 tonne scrap shear is used for the controlled mechanical dismantling and deconstruction of large structures from offshore and onshore.

Two Liebherr 934 34 tonne wheeled scrap handlers with 5 tine grab and magnet are used for scrap and other material handling.

As a Company we are fully committed to the principles of “no harm to people and no harm to the environment”. We have put in place controls and training to ensure that we achieve this.

Our facility is managed by Technically Competent Persons and we hold full professional membership of the Institute of Wastes Management, Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and the British Metals Recycling Association.

We manage our daily operation through an integrated health, safety, environmental and quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001: 2004. The system is audited by SGS every six months and we hold current assessment and registration certificates. The audit visits, lasting 2 days, examine all aspects of our operation and include detailed site and operational inspections together with examination of site records and systems.

We fully utilise the training resources provided by our professional and industry accredited memberships. The IWM and BMRA are particularly useful in providing up to date resources for health and safety and environmental training/awareness. This is implemented by way of regular staff training sessions held either in-house or using accredited external trainers. Our training and development plan meets the Investors in People standard and we have held IIP accreditation for over 6 years.

Our site is inspected every 2 months by Scottish Environment Protection Agency inspectors as part of our site licensing requirement. We have achieved a clean bill of health during each visit with no contraventions of our site licence being recorded.
